Dr Sadaqat Ali defines Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as restlessness varying in severity and intensity. Some people may have a low degree of OCD symptoms and are able to manage it on their own. Other times, the degree of symptoms may increase when they are tired or under stress. One may be able to differentiate normal thoughts from repetitive obsessive thoughts but they come in the way and interfere with our work so we lose focus. For example, one may have obsessive thoughts about having dirty hands and may keep on washing to cleanse them. Here, the thoughts about having dirty hands would be an obsession and repetitive hand washing would be characterized as a compulsion. Research suggests that OCD may be genetic and thus runs in families however it is not 100% clear yet. In our culture, excessive worrying is very common. The neurotransmitter, serotonin plays an important role. For treatment, we should know where to comply and where not to show compliance. If we totally surrender to them, it will cause disturbance however if we resist these thoughts, it’ll be less disturbing for us. If we fight back by using our will power, sleep enough, eat enough and lead a healthy functioning lifestyle we may be able to have a control on it.
