This movie shows an artist's conception of the Sun, Earth and asteroid 2010 TK7 (right) as seen by an observer revolving around the Sun near the Earth. The path of the asteroid as seen in this frame is traced out in green. Each green loop takes one year to complete and constitutes one epicycle. While the figures in the paper show the longitudinal and averaged annual motion of the asteroid, this movie shows its full epicyclic motion which displays considerable excursions in all directions from its average position. Despite the asteroid's complex motion, the center of the epicycle is constrained to move in the leading (L4) sector of the Earth's orbit. Credit: Connors et al. Nature
